First Edition Identifiers
Like most of the first editions published by Burroughs, Inc. this first edition has a blue cloth and red lettering on the cover and spine. Burroughs, Inc. first published this book on 9/1/1932 and reprinted this book again in 1940 and 1948. The 1940 book cover is red and has blue lettering and includes the same dust jacket as is on the 1932 first edition. The 1948 printings have tan covers with blue lettering. Studley Burroughs (ERB's nephew) illustrated the dust jacket and five interior illustrations. Like “Tarzan the Invincible” this first edition does not state “First Edition” anywhere.
In 1934 Grosset & Dunlap purchased excess stock from Burroughs Inc. and reprinted this book which has “Grosset & Dunlap” on the spine but “Burroughs, Inc.” on the title page. This “mixed edition” book has a red cover with black lettering.
