The Oakdale Affair - and - The Rider | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
FIRST EDITION IDENTIFIERS:
As the title suggests, this book is comprised of two separate unrelated novels. It was published by Burroughs, Inc. on Feb. 15, 1937. The words "First Edition" are on the copyright page. The cover is blue with a pebbled texture and red lettering. There is also a red stain applied to the top edge of the pages. The dust jacket and two interior illustrations are by John Coleman Burroughs. Later that same year, Grosset & Dunlap purchased unsold copies of this title from Burroughs, Inc. This book is commonly called a "mixed edition" having the first edition pages and boards with Grosset & Dunlap printed on the title page and spine. A 1938 reprinting by Grosset & Dunlap is very similar to the mixed edition in that it also has blue boards with red lettering and a red top stain. However its boards are smooth and not pebbled, the lettering is not indented (see photo of book at bottom of page). The book below is of the first edition, first printing. Note the pebbled texture. |

Above is the first edition dust jacket. I would grade it a "Very Good +" jacket due to spine fade and small edge tears.

The two photo's to the right are of the 1938 Grosset & Dunlap reprint. Note the smooth surface as compared to the pebbled texture of the above photo. Also, "Grosset & Dunlap" is printed on the spine.
